WaveOne Wireless Internet Access FAQ

Q: Where is Wireless Internet Access Available?
A: At this time Wireless Internet Access is only available to selected sites in Warsaw, IN and Leesburg, IN area.

Q: What is Wireless Internet Access?
A: Traditionally, access to the Internet has been restricted by the limitations of telephone lines and modems, which take digital information and transmit it over analog phone lines. WaveOne's Wireless Internet access takes the data and transmits it through the air using standard Ethernet protocol. Because the data is no longer restricted by copper phone lines and a device that modulates and demodulates (mo-dem), the transfer rate speeds up and data integrity improves dramatically.

Q: Which is better for business, wireless or regular phone/data lines?
A: WaveOne's Wireless Access is much less expensive than data lines and the cost to connect them to the Internet. Our transceivers are capable of bursting up to 1.5 Mbps. That is over 50 times faster than the speed of a standard 28.8 kbps modem. With wireless, you can have a much faster, more reliable connection to the Internet, at a fraction of the cost.

Q: What do I need on my end to take advantage of WaveOne's Wireless service?
A: For a business, you will need to purchase a transceiver unit and an antenna from WaveOne. This antenna and transceiver are what enable you to send and receive data. You will also need a network interface card in a computer to bridge to your Ethernet LAN, and proxy server software that can run with Windows 95/NT. You should recover these costs in a short time with money saved over other available services.

Q: What if I wasn't interested in doing this for a business, but rather for my home?
A: WaveOne has a special program for home users, where the cost would be less because your traffic would be less. Although you would still need to purchase a transceiver, antenna, and network card, you wouldn't have to worry about having software/hardware available to route the traffic. Also, the monthly fee would be less, since you would be using less bandwidth.

Q: What kinds of speeds could I get from such a connection?
A: The easiest way to answer that is to compare wireless to what you can receive with a modem. If you have a 56K modem, you are able to receive data, without compression, at speeds up to 56,000 bits per second (bps). With our wireless service, it is possible to achieve speeds better than 50 times what you could get from a modem. However, you are still slightly limited by overall traffic on the Internet.

Q: Would a wireless connection use a modem?
A: No. You won't need a modem, and you won't need a telephone line. All the data travels to and from your machine by way of a network interface card, which costs less than a standard modem. With WaveOne's Wireless access, you could be connected to the Internet 24 hours a day, and not be tying up a phone line.

Q: If I had my business spread out over a large area and several buildings, could I operate my LAN via your wireless network?
A: Absolutely! Then you would have the added benefit of a faster connection between buildings for your LAN and Internet access on all machines as well. There may be additional costs, depending on your needs.

Q: How secure is data which is sent via wireless?
A: Our wireless systems use the same "frequency hopping" technology utilized by the military. In addition, someone would have to know a specific password feature and character set incorporated into our transceivers to even access the network.
